With impressive showing of talents by 270 athletes from 20 countries of the Americas, the XIV edition of the Pan American Claro Games, organized by the Pan American Surf Association (PASA).
Team Peru won their fifth Team Gold Medal and the title of 2018 Pan American Surfing Games. With 12502 points, the locals won over Brazil who won the Silver Medal with 11952 points and Argentina winners of the Bronze Medal with 9986.
Individuall, eight athletes are the new Pan Amerian Gold Medalists, and they are one step closer to Lima 2019 Pan American Games.
Final Day of the event started with the exciting SUP Technical Races. First Men’s division winner was Peru’s Itzel Delgado, winner of the Gold Medal with a time of 24:58 minutes. Silver Medal was for Brazil’s Vinnicius Martins with 25:02 and third with the Bronze Medal was Giorgio Gómez from Colombia with 25:16 minutes.
“In the qualifier race I gave my 70%”, said Delgado. “In the final I gave my 100% for the Medal. I gave everything with my mind set in the Gold and I let no one to pass me”.
In the Women’s Race USA’s April Zilg won the Gold Medal with a time of 27:52 minutes, Puerto Rico’s Maricarmen Rivera won the Silver Medal with 28:08, and in third, winner of the Bronze Medal was Canada’s Lina Augaitis with 28:11 minutes.
The new Gold Medalist said: “Semifinals where more fun for me because we had wind and waves. During the qualifier I was running with small bumps and waves in the longest side of the racing course. But for the Final, it was flat, glassy and with no wind, and with strong currents against you, so it felt like paddling in cement for a few hundred meters. Then I got lucky and got a wave in my second lap and I was so thankful for that. If I had to make the course again without help, it would be sad for me.”
I’m also thankful that for the Final we had a beach start. Equality in out sport is really important, so conditions for both men and women must be the same”. added Zilg.
In Open Men division, Venezuela’s Francisco Bellorín is the new Pan American Champion. Bellorín was constant strong during the event, which led him to the top of the Awards Podium.
In the final, the venezuelan defeated with 14.17 Costa Rica’s Silver Medalist Anthony Fillingim (12.20 pts), and Peru’s Bronze Medal, Alonso Correa (10.70). In fourth place came Jhonathan Corzo from México (10.07).
Bellorín said: “Thanks to all the people who sent good vibes here. I had almost two years without competing, spending time with my family. I also almost didn’t come to the event because my mom is a bit sick, but a lot of people encouraged me to come. It’s been years since I last saw all the Latin Americans together, and seeing many friends that I had long time without sharing with them. I came here to enjoy this event and to share this energy, we all are brothers, thanks!”
In Open Women Costa Rica’s Brisa Hennessy took the Gold Medal in her first time competing at the Pan American Surfing Games.
The tica scored a total of 14.50 defeating Silver Medalist Dominic Barona from Ecuador (14.17 pts), and Bronze Medalist Daniella Rosas from Peru (10.40 pts). In fourth came Barbados’ Chelsea Tuach (8.47 pts).
