With four surfers still alive for Finals Day, Peru can’t be caught. Clutch shortboard performances put the red-and-white on the highest step of the podium

Monterrico, Guatemala — July 12, 2025 — What a day at El Rosario: double-overhead tubes, gold medals on the line, and teams roaring themselves hoarse from the beach. When the spray settled, Peru was confirmed as the new Pan-American surf champion.

The key? Vania Torres’s repeat gold in women’s SUP Surf and Sebastián Gómez’s silver in the men’s final—Peru’s two biggest scores of the event so far. Add Itzel Delgado’s SUP Race bronze and Cristopher Bayona’s fourth place in men’s bodyboard, and the title math became undeniable.

Torres Shows True Grit

Chasing back-to-back SUP Surf crowns after winning at home in 2024, Torres faced a raging ocean: double-overhead walls and brutal currents. She banked an opener, then every finalist was steamrolled by the biggest set of the day—snapping Torres’s leash and costing precious minutes. Back on the sand, she grabbed a spare, took a breath, and paddled straight out for the score she needed: a left that let her hammer two solid turns. Judges confirmed the win, capping a sweep of every heat she surfed.

Puerto Rico’s Torres Takes Men’s SUP Surf

In men’s SUP Surf, Puerto Rico’s Maximiliano Torres capped a dominant run with gold, dropping a 5.50 starter and a 7.70 closer. Peru’s Gómez kept things interesting with a 6.33 but couldn’t find the backup, settling for silver. Argentina’s Franco Faccin grabbed bronze after six busy waves; fellow Boricua Dave de Armas claimed copper.

Shortboard Finals Set

South America will keep the men’s shortboard crown. Ecuador placed Álex SuĂĄrez and Bruce Burgos into the final, with Chile’s Reimundo Berry and Peru’s Lucas PĂ©rez del Solar completing the lineup.

Women tackled Rounds 2 and 3 in building surf. Semifinal 1: Ecuador’s GĂ©nesis Borja, Mexico’s Maya Mateja, Peru’s Daniella Rosas, and Uruguay’s Marcela Machado. Semifinal 2: Ecuador’s Dominic Barona, Costa Rica’s Rachel AgĂŒero (through despite an interference), and Peru’s Catalina Zariquiei and SofĂa Artieda.

Shortboard—always the fan favorite—crowns its champs tomorrow. Ecuador has two men in the final and two women in the semis; Peru counters with one man and three women. Thanks to today’s SUP Surf, bodyboard, and SUP Race haul, Peru is already unreachable in the team race.
