Last week, the President of the Pan American Surf Association (PASA), Karin Sierralta, had a virtual meeting with the Presidents of Surfing Federations of the Americas.
Presidents from Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Ecuador, El Salvador, Mexico, Nicaragua, Peru, Puerto Rico and Venezuela.
Also Mr. Antonio Sotillo (VEN) attended the meeting in representation of the South American Surf Confederation.
The main subject of the meeting was to get to know the current status of each National Federation during this COVID-19 world emergency and to collect information to issue protocols and recommendations for the safe practice of Surfing, once the sport is allowed in each country and regions.
“These recommendations issued by PASA will comply to sanitary regulations of each country, as we know that each city and beach may have different guidelines that must be respected”, said President Sierralta.
About the 2020 ISA World Surfing Games
President Sierralta reported during this meeting that the ISA has been meeting with the authorities of El Salvador and the IOC to define a new date for 2020 Surf City El Salvador ISA World Surfing Games. Organizers are hoping to hold the event this year, following the World Health Organization recommendations and measures.
As another option, the event could be held until May 2021, depending on the evolution of the world situation caused by COVID19. Finally, ISA will responsibly make the best decision for all member countries.
During this meeting, the PASA Executive Board informed about the status of its different projects, like the Pan American Junior Surfing Games, that will be suspended until 2021.
Also, the Chilean Surfing Federation (Fechsurf), announced its interest of organizing the 2021 and 2022 edition of the Pan American Surfing Games, as test event and clasificatory event for the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.
Another subject treated during this virtual meeting, was the approval for the inclusion of Bodyboard to Santiago 2023 Pan American Games and Para Surfing to the 2023 Parapan American Games.
“We are taking the first step toward of what would be an historic inclusion of Bodyboard and Para Surfing to the Pan American and Parapan American Games, the second largest sporting event in the globe after the Olimpics and Paralimpics”.
“Para Surfing has had a great development during recent years, and this has been shown during the successful editions of the ISA World Para Surfing Championships. The level of growth will make the discipline a great addition to the Games”.
“From PASA we will be working alongside the International Surfing Association to make this inclusion possible for Santiago 2023”, added President Sierralta.
