South American nation achieves the three-time championship thanks to the excellent individual performance of its athletes
Peru, Argentina and Chile follow with the Silver, Bronze and Copper medals
Nine days of sportsmanship and friendship come to an end today with the crowning of Team Brazil as the three-time Pan American Surfing Champions at the XVII Pan American Surfing Games of the Pan American Surf Association (PASA).
This event was possible thanks to the sponsorship of Equans, Marca Perú, Floril, Generade and 360 Energy Drink, with the support of the Peruvian Sports Institute, the National Surfing Federation of Peru, Proyecto Legado and the Municipality of Punta Negra.
For the third consecutive year, the Brazilians won the Team Gold Medal and the title of Champion thanks to the individual performance of their athletes in the five male and female categories who participated in this event, held from October 4 to 13 in the waves of Punta Rocas, Lima, Peru.
The Silver Medal was awarded to Peru, the Bronze Medal to Argentina and the Copper Medal to Chile.
On this day, the Gold Medalists in the Shortboard category, both male and female, were also defined.
The first final in the water was the Women’s Shortboard where three Brazilians, Julia Duarte, Silvana Lima and Juliana Dos Santos and Melanie Giunta from Peru, faced each other for the Gold Medal.
With eight minutes left to finish the Heat, competitor Duarte was leading, but after a fall she had to be assisted to get out of the water due to an injury, leaving the final Heat with only three competitors.
Once the final restarted, Giunta, who was in fourth position, managed to find a good wave that allowed him to combine different maneuvers that gave him a score of 8.67, giving her the necessary boost to win the Gold Medal.
In the Men’s Shortboard competition, Andres Echecopar from Peru, the Argentines Joaquín Muñoz and Franco Radziunas and Sebastián Williams from Mexico faced each other.
During the first minutes of the Heat, the first place was constantly exchanged between the Peruvian and the two Argentines, while Williams tried to catch good waves, but without results.
Finally, Williams’ effort and perseverance paid off when he managed to catch an important wave that he closed with an aerial maneuver that gave him a score of 9.50 points, the highest score of the entire event, and less than seven minutes before the end of the series. Williams finished with another important wave of 7.43, with which he added 16.93 to take the Pan American Gold Medal.
